In the fall of 2014, The Light Academy started it’s first year as a K-8th grade school in a rented shopping center space in Palmyra, VA. God sent us teachers, students, and everything we needed from computers, tables, chairs, and materials in the first year. It was truly a joyful year! Through the years, God has continued to bless and provide with additional staff, buses, desks, and supplies. In our third year, we started a high school program adding 9th and 10th grades in two additional classrooms within the shopping center. In the fall of 2018, we expanded our high school to 12th grade and added our preschool program. God blessed us more than we could ever expect!

In December 2017, The Light Academy purchased a 22,000 square foot school building on 12 acres located only 8 miles away from our first location in Palmyra, VA! We moved to our new space during Christmas break and had our second semester in our new building. It was truly joyful! During the 2018-2019 school year, Harold Schmeil and his wife Mary Boreusk renovated our kitchen. God blessed us with donated tile, granite countertops, cherry cabinetry, and appliances. We began serving hot lunches in the 2019-2020 school year.

The 2020-2021 school and preschool year was certainly challenging with the COVID pandemic. Our students attended five days a week, and our enrollment was a record high of 120 students! The Light Academy's first graduates were the class of 2021. In the 2021-2022 school year, the Light Academy continued to grow! One of our school families donated a new playground. The students were elated, and we were so grateful! We purchased our second bus to transport students daily to and from school. In the 2022-2023 school year, we made some major comsetic changes to take care of the facility God gave us.

In the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment continued to increase, and we opened a new classroom! We have implemented more technology within each classroom. We had our first volleyball team and formed a boys basketball team with our friends at Calvary Christian School. We were also able to purchase our third bus.

We are embarking on our 10th year here at The Light Academy for the 2024-2025 school/preschool year! God has blessed! This year we are adding a second bus route to Fork Union, New Canton, Arvonia, Dillwyn, and Scottsville.

The Light Academy is a non-denominational community Christian school founded on the scripture Matthew 5:14-16: 

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on it’s stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
